50 Shades of Grey

50 Shades of Grey graphic

In honor of the movie 50 Shades of Grey debuting this week, I decided to share a graphic that I did with my friend {Savanna}. Back in 2012, Seattle’s Space Needle celebrated its 50th Anniversary.  An International design contest was held to design the look for the top of the Space Needle and celebrate its 50th birthday.  One day, on a rainy weekday, {Savanna} and I were sitting in a coffee shop and we were talking about the popular book at the time, 50 Shades of Grey.  We were contemplating on entering the contest. For some reason, through our silly discussion, we were talking about the Space Needle, the rainy  Seattle gray weather, the book that was set in Seattle, and other design talk that we came up with idea of doing a Pantone inspired 50 Shades of Grey color wheel as our design.  50 colors of Grey – and all named a unique name that ties in with Seattle. We were so excited about our design and thought we had a good chance of winning. We didn’t even make the top 6 and if you saw the top 6 you be like “huh?!!?!”. Serious, we were not bitter at all, but the winning design was seriously a head-scratcher.  Anyway, go see the movie and drool over Jamie Dornan. Happy Friday ! – xoxo SADV

ps. This print is available for purchase. Please contact me if you would like to order!

  1. Steph, you and Savannah what a clever idea and it didn’t make the top 6???? Some people just are not thinking beyond their noses I guess…. EXCELLENT concept especially for the Space Needle and the book! I think you should market this further than your blog….. get into all the excitement of the movie and maybe the author?
